Additional guidance

MG21A is a follow up instruction form used when further scientific or forensic work is needed after an original MG21 – Submission of Work for Scientific Examination has already been sent.

The original MG21 accompanies evidence or samples submitted for testing and records the points to prove, the work requested and relevant target dates. MG21A is used later to tell the forensic provider what additional or amended work is required.

It should clearly identify:

  • the original MG21 submission and relevant case or exhibit references;
  • the further examination, testing or analysis requested;
  • why the additional work is needed;
  • any relevant new information, issue or development; and
  • any revised timescale or priority requirement.

MG21A is completed by the person or team instructing the additional forensic work. It is distinct from the MG22 series, which contains reports prepared by forensic experts:

  • MG22A: early forensic information, intelligence or strategy;
  • MG22B / SFR1: initial streamlined forensic results; and
  • MG22C / SFR2: further expert evidence on identified or disputed forensic issues.

MG21A is an instruction and audit trail document. It is not itself a witness statement, expert report or document normally intended to be used as evidence.

The current public reference is the Home Office criminal casefile and MG form guidance. The forensic work process must also follow the applicable Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice.
