Additional guidance
MG22A is an Initial Forensic Investigation Report, sometimes described as a forensic information report. It is used at an early stage where a forensic assessment of a scene, exhibit or available information may help police decide what to do next.
It may record:
- early intelligence findings or conclusions before a suspect is identified;
- forensic results being used for intelligence or investigation purposes only;
- scene examination findings;
- an initial visual assessment of exhibits;
- a proposed, agreed or future forensic strategy; and
- key timescales for further forensic work.
MG22A is completed by a forensic expert or authorised forensic practitioner, not by a police investigator. It is intended to support investigation and case strategy, and is not itself normally intended to be used as evidence.
It is different from:
- MG22B / SFR1, which summarises key forensic results for early case progression and possible agreement between the parties; and
- MG22C / SFR2, which provides further expert evidence on a specific forensic issue identified or disputed after the Stage 1 report.
Information first recorded in MG22A may later be transferred to an MG22B report if it becomes relevant to the evidential case. The report should be peer reviewed before release, or state where this has not occurred.
The current public references are the Home Office criminal casefile and MG-form guidance, the Forensic Capability Network’s national SFR guidance, and the Forensic Science Regulator’s statutory Code of Practice.
