Additional guidance

MG22B is the Stage 1 Streamlined Forensic Report, commonly called SFR1. It provides a concise summary of key forensic information from initial analysis, comparison, database searches or forensic results.

Its purpose is to identify the important forensic issues early in the case. The report may be used to seek agreement on findings that are not disputed, helping the court and parties focus on what evidence is actually needed.

MG22B is completed by a forensic expert or authorised forensic practitioner. It is not completed or amended by police investigators.

MG22B is a summary of forensic evidence. It is not a full expert report or witness statement under the Criminal Procedure Rules. It is generally not intended to be used as evidence unless the parties agree the relevant facts. If forensic issues are disputed, the parties may need:

  • MG22C / SFR2, a Stage 2 report addressing the identified issue; or
  • a full evaluative forensic report, where the issue requires more detailed expert opinion.

Relationship to other MG22 forms:

  • MG22A records initial forensic investigation or strategy information;
  • MG22B / SFR1 records key initial forensic results;
  • MG22C / SFR2 responds to disputed forensic issues; and
  • MG22D records crime scene investigation or forensic examination evidence.

The report should be clear, limited to the relevant findings, and sufficient to identify whether further forensic work or expert evidence is needed.

The current public references are the Home Office criminal casefile and MG-form guidance, the Forensic Science Regulator’s statutory Code of Practice, and CPS guidance on expert evidence and streamlined forensic reporting.
