Sentence date calculator

Work out calendar dates for one adult standard determinate sentence in England and Wales using a release fraction confirmed in official paperwork.

The calculation runs in your browser. This tool does not send or save the information you enter. You do not need to enter a name, offence or prison number.

What this tool can calculate

It counts calendar years, months, weeks and days, then applies the release fraction you provide. It does not decide which release law applies. Use the fraction confirmed for this sentence by the prison sentence calculation team.

Multiple or consecutive sentences, recall, life sentences, extended sentences, youth detention and any remand, tagged bail or other time adjustments need a different calculation. This tool will not calculate those cases.

1. Check the calculation is supported

This includes remand credit, tagged bail credit, additional days or time unlawfully at large.

2. Enter the sentence

Enter the sentence length as it appears on the paperwork.

3. Confirm the release fraction

Copy the applicable fraction from official sentence calculation paperwork. Do not select a fraction just because it appears to match an offence or sentence length. Changes in the law and transitional rules can affect which fraction applies.

Calculation method

The calendar arithmetic is adapted from the Ministry of Justice Calculate Release Dates source code. The sentence start is counted as day one and fractional days are rounded up. This is an independent Hub tool and does not connect to HMPPS records or run its full legal rules engine.
