Prison population dashboard updated

We have corrected an error in how weekly prison population figures were imported. The prison population dashboard now brings together checked weekly totals for England and Wales and monthly figures for individual prisons.

You can use the updated dashboard to:

• Explore previous weekly and monthly publications, with the observation date shown.
• Search the monthly figures by prison and compare up to six prisons side by side.
• Compare population, operational capacity and certified normal accommodation, with explanations of the different measures.
• View changes over time and download the figures as CSV.

Where a publication combines more than one prison or unit, the dashboard identifies the shared total. Function filters use the dated 2025/26 classification and are not a complete list of prisons by security category.

The weekly record for 26 August 2022 remains marked Pending review because the source figures disagree. Its figures are withheld rather than shown as zero.
