Whatton scrutiny visit 2020
Report for Whatton Prison
Summary
During a scrutiny visit, HMP Whatton was a category C training prison in Nottinghamshire. Inspectors found a calm and respectful environment, but COVID-19 restrictions left most prisoners locked up for around 22 hours a day and limited activity. Key concerns were the national recovery framework, the absence of a robust way to identify vulnerable prisoners and social isolators, poorer reported experiences among black prisoners, and a shortage of suitable release accommodation. Thirteen prisoners had been released without accommodation since April. Positive practice included support for older prisoners and people needing social care, responsive mental health services, the Acorn therapeutic project and Safer Living Foundation mentoring.
