Summary

This independent review of progress at HMP Lewes followed up 12 of the 53 recommendations from the 2019 inspection. Inspectors judged that three recommendations showed good progress, six showed reasonable progress and three showed insufficient progress; none showed no meaningful progress. The review covers violence reduction, self harm, use of force, drug supply, living conditions, health care and offender management, as well as three education themes reviewed by Ofsted. It records improvements in governance and several services, while identifying work still needed on staff challenge, long term health care, assessments and purposeful activity.
