HM Inspectorate of Prisons report

Durham inspection report 2024

Report for Durham Prison

Summary

A new governor and deputy have brought some much-needed stability to this ageing, overcrowded reception prison that serves the courts across large parts of the north of England. Recent decisive action by the prison group director and the governor have led to transfers of leaders between prisons in the region. In the case of Durham this has refreshed the leadership team and, although our healthy prison assessment scores for safety and purposeful activity had dropped to not sufficiently good and poor respectively, I left with some optimism
