HM Inspectorate of Prisons report

Doncaster inspection report 2022

Report for Doncaster Prison

Summary

At its 2022 inspection HMP & YOI Doncaster held just over 1,100 men and young adults, about a third of whom were on remand. Safety outcomes improved to reasonably good and assaults fell below the average for similar prisons, although self harm remained high. Respect remained reasonably good, while overcrowding and poor showers continued. Purposeful activity remained not sufficiently good: most prisoners had around two and a half hours out of cell, the library was not fully open, and too few accessed education, skills and work. Rehabilitation and release planning improved to good, with stronger assessments, sentence plans, public protection and video links. The report also records good induction, foreign national support, social care and health leadership, alongside recommendations on body worn cameras, equitable activity, English and mathematics, data and sentence planning.
