Brixton independent review of progress 2023
Report for Brixton Prison
Summary
This independent review of progress at HMP Brixton followed up 14 recommendations from the March 2022 inspection. Inspectors judged that five showed good progress, three showed reasonable progress, four showed insufficient progress and two showed no meaningful progress. Relationships and wing conditions had improved, but overcrowded cells, too few activity places and weak education remained. Health care access, MAPPA confirmation and use of force scrutiny improved, while care for new arrivals, ACCT support, sentence planning, sex offender programmes, re categorisation and release on temporary licence remained problematic. An employment hub and health support sessions were positive practice. The report says that sustained HMPPS support, a reduced headcount and much more purposeful activity were still needed.
