HM Inspectorate of Prisons report

Ashfield inspection report 2026

Report for Ashfield Prison

Summary

Ashfield near Bristol, is a category C training prison for just over 400 adult men. A relatively modern institution, the prison is operated by SERCO, and has specialised since 2013 in holding men convicted of sexual offences. At this inspection, we found the prison had maintained its reputation for safety, stability and a clear commitment to rehabilitation. Outcomes for prisoners were good in three of our healthy prison tests – safety, respect and preparation for release – and, although outcomes in purposeful activity were assessed as not sufficiently good, there was evidence of progress. Violence in the prison was very low, with no recent serious incidents. Use of force was rare, and prisoners told us they felt safe.
